A city you can get to know on foot
Toruń is compact. That sounds like a small thing until you compare it with a city where every lecture starts with thirty minutes on a bus. Here, most of student life fits inside a walk: the Old Town, the faculties, the shops, the Vistula riverside.
Add the history — medieval walls, Gothic townhouses and a market square that genuinely functions as the centre of the city rather than a weekend attraction. Add a large student population, and the city stays alive well outside the tourist season.
The market square and the streets around it
Rynek Staromiejski is the reference point for the whole city — you start there and you usually end your evening there too. Around it, narrow brick streets lead to cafés, small restaurants and the kind of places you only hear about from friends.
In the evening the Old Town changes character: fewer tour groups, more students, light from the windows falling on the cobbles. It is the quickest way to feel that you live in the city rather than just study in it.
Philadelphia Boulevard: the city's other half
A few minutes from the square the city stops and the river begins. Philadelphia Boulevard is where you walk after classes, run, cycle, and sit by the water with the Old Town skyline in front of you.
In summer it becomes the default meeting point, and a much better one than any plan B.
The best way to learn Toruń: go out with no plan and turn down a different street than usual.
Cafés, bars, clubs, cheap eats and study spots
Every student ends up with a fixed set of places: a café for studying, a bar for Thursdays, somewhere with food at a student price. We collect recommendations below — and only add them once we have checked them ourselves and residents of Centrum vouch for them.
